Start of the main German attack in the battle. The village of Zandvoorde is captured but there is no breakthrough.
The Indian Corps begins to replace II Corps in the front line.
German Army Group Fabeck attacks at Gheluvelt and Messines. The Cavalry Corps is forced to retreat from Hollebeke at the northern end of their line, but holds on to Messines. Their main line is forced back to the Messines Ridge.
The seaplane carrier HMS Hermes delivers a load of seaplans to Dunkirk. On the following day, while returning home, she is sunk off Ruylingen Bank by U-27. Partly as a result of this the heavy ships bombarding German positions on the Belgian coast, including the battleship HMS Venerable, are withdrawn.
Canopus class battleship HMS Goliath reaches Mombasa with the Indian Army expedition to German East Africa. She then has to stop for repairs, so the expedition contimues without her.
The cruiser HMS Chatham finds the German raider Königsberg in the Rufiji River (East Africa) and begins a blockade that lasts into 1915.
