Race to the Sea: Battle of Armentières

Biggest German attack on III Corps. The British manage to hold on to most of the ground they held at the start of the day.

First Battle of Ypres: Battle of Gheluvelt

The battle begins with a preliminary attack towards Gheluvelt. The village is held, but German troops capture the crossroads east of the village.

Race to the Sea: Battle of Le Bassee

Early in the day the Germans are reported to have abandoned Neuve Chapelle, but that night they use it as a base for their last major attack of the battle of Le Bassee. The attack fails. After this most of the German heavy artillery moves north to take part in the first battle of Yypres.

War at Sea

Admiral von Spee's reaches the area the Chilean port of Valparaiso but remains out of sight from land.

SMS Goeben bombards the Russian port of Sevastopol and sinks the Russian ship Prut, probably without the knowledge of the Turkish government.
