Race to the Sea: Battle of the Yser

After retreating from Antwerp the Belgian army stops on the River Yser, just inside Belgian territory. On 18 October the German III Reserve Corps attacks all along the line between Dixmunde and the sea. They capture a number of Belgian bridgeheads east of the river but are unable to cross to the west bank.

Battle of the Vistula

The German retreat from the vicinity of Warsaw begins. The Russian pursuit starts on the following day.

War at Sea

Admiral von Spee's squadron leaves Easter Island, heading for Mas-a-fuera Island (now Alejandro Selkirk Island).

HMS Ocean joins a convoy bringing the VI Indian Division to secure the oil refinery and oil terminal at Abadan at the head of the Persian Gulf.

SMS Emden captures the Troilus and the St. Egbert, keeping the second ship as a prison ship
