British II Corps is ordered to go onto the defensive. This comes just as the Germans begin an offensive along their entire line from Arras to the sea. II Corps is able to hold its line.

Race to the Sea: First Battle of Ypres

IV Corps spends 20 October maintaining its position and preparing for an attack being planned by Sir John French.
