Race to the Sea: Battle of Armentières

British III Corps captures the town of Armentieres.

Race to the Sea: Battle of Messines

Cavalry Corps advance stops on the night of 17-18 October. It will hold this line until the German attack of 30-31 October.

Battle of the Vistula

Hindeburg and Ludendorff are forced to order their troops near Warsaw to begin a retreat in the face of a much stronger Russian force.

War at Sea

The cruiser HMS Undaunted leads four destroyers in an attack on four German destroyers off the Dutch coast, sinking all four (S 115, S 117, S 118 and S 119).

Two battleships (including HMS Queen) are chosen to support the defenders of Dunkirk, but are diverted to Dover before they reach France.
