With German troops across the Yser the Belgians decide to popen the locks, flooding the area between the river and the Dixmunde-Nieuport railway. The first attempt to open the locks at Fumes fails on 27 October.
HMS Venerable bombards German positions near the coast from 7am to 8.15am then withdraws because a submarine has been spotted.
HMS Audacious becomes the first British battleship to be sunk during the First World War. She hit a newly laid German mine off Lough Swilly and although the initial damage wasn't too serious she began to flood and floundered in rough weather. At the time of her loss she was only one year old, and her loss was kept secret for some time. No-one is killed on the Audacious but one man is killed on the cruiser HMS Liverpool when Audacious explodes after capsizing.
