German troops break the British lines south of Gheluvelt. The village is captured and the Germans are on the verge of an attack towards Ypres when they were forced back by a counterattack launched by 364 men from the 2nd Worcesters. They capture Gheluvelt chateau, and with the help of troops from 7th Division restore the line.
General Sir James Willcocks, commander of Indian Corps, officially takes over the Le Bassee sector from Smith-Dorrien's II Corps.
German troops capture part of Messines and force the Cavalry Corps back. By the end of the day French reinforcements have arrived, but the German advance continues for several days.
HMS Glasgow hears radio signals from the Leipzig, part of Admiral von Spee's squadron. Both von Spee and the British commander Admiral Craddock decide to move to Coronel, both hoping to defeat an isolated enemy cruiser. Instead they bring on a larger battle.
The seaplane carrier HMS Hermes is sunk by U-27 off Ruylingen Bank with the loss of 22 men. She was returning from ferrying a load of seaplanes to Dunkirk.
