Arrival of the British Royal Naval Division helps restore morale in Antwerp and may have prolonged the defence of the city for a crucial few days, keeping the Germans from moving their troops to the Race to the Sea. Winston Churchill takes personal command of the fighting for two days, despite being First Lord of the Admiralty.
German attack north of Arras causes a crisis in the French command after General Maud'huy reports that he is in danger of being cut off and would have to retreat. He asks Joffre which direct he should move in.
In response Joffre forms Maud'huy's detachemtn int a new Tenth Army. The Second and Tenth Armies are placed under General Foch, who is appointed as Joffre's deputy and commander of the armies in the north. He makes a lightning tour of his new command and rejuvinates the Allied defences around Arras.
A British wireless station on Fiji intercepts radio messages sent by Admiral von Spee's squadron. Admiral Craddock is ordered to move to the west coast of South America.
