Race to the Sea: Battle of Armentières

British advance comes to an end. For the rest of the battle III Corps is on the defensive, and manages to hold on to most of the ground it has occupied since the start of the battle.

Race to the Sea: Battle of Le Bassee

New Allied attack begins. The only British success comes with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish, captured the village of Le Pilly on Aubers Ridge. The Irish are dangerously isolated and are soon surrounded by the Germans. The battalion loses 600 men and the remaining 300 have to surrender.

Race to the Sea: First Battle of Ypres

Official start of the First Battle of Ypres. The British are planning to attack towards Menin, but get advanced warning of a German attack. The British attack is cancelled at 11.45am, with the orders reaching the front line by 1.05pm.

War at Sea

The cruiser HMS Chatham, operating off east Africa, captures the German liner Präsident, and discovered papers that suggested the Königsberg was in the Rufiji River

SMS Emden captures the Exford and Chilkana and then escapes to the east.
