British II Corps attempts to recapture the village of Neuve Chapelle but the attack is repulsed.

Race to the Sea: Battle of the Yser

The second Belgian attempt to open the locks at Fumes is a success. The area between the River Yser and the Dixmunde-Nieuport railway is flooded, producing a water barrier that holds the Germans off for the rest of the war.

HMS Venerable returns to take part in a bombardment of German positions.

Penang Raid

The German cruiser Emden sailed into Penang Harbour and sinks the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and the French destroyer Mousquet.
