Germans blast a hole in the line of fortresses protecting Antwerp and launch an attack that comes close to success.
Prince Rupprecht orders his reserve corps to attack north of Arras while IV cavalry corps moves north towards Lille. The Germans also attack the line of French territorial troops south of Arras.
Admiral von Spee's radio operator makes contact with the Leipzig and the Dresden. They are ordered to join his squadron at Easter Island.
The first Canadian troop convoy leaves for Britain, escorted by the 12th Cruiser Squadron (Admiral Wemyss, with the cruiser HMS Charydis).
