Race to the Sea: Battle of Le Bassee

The British retreat to a new line on the night of 22-23 October isn't detected by the Germans, so 23 October turns into a rare quiet day.

First battle of Ypres: Battle of Langemarck

On the previous day the Germans had captured the Kortekeer Cabaret. Haig responded by forming a new reserve force which retakes the Caberat by 1pm. A German attack against Langemarck is defeated by the same time. The French also launch an attack, from the lines held by the British 2nd Division. This attack also fails. The French then replace 2nd Division in the line.

War at Sea

Convoy carrying the VI Indian Division, guarded by HMS Ocean, heading for the oil facility at Abadan, reaches Bahrain. The Ocean is unable to get any further up the Gulf.
