General Karl von Bulow, one of the main German commanders during the advance into Belgium and the initial sweep in France, is moved to command a new Second Army being formed at St. Quentin. His original command takes part in the Race to the Sea.
Antwerp surrenders. By this date the garrison consists of three men - one private, one sergeant and General Deguise. The rest of the army has been evacuated to the west, where it fights on the Western Front for the rest of the war.
II Corps of the BEF reaches Abbeville by train on 8-9 October. On 10 October it begins a move north-east towards La Bassee, to the left of the French lines. The first major contact with German troops comes two days later.
