Eastern Front
Russian troops attack the new Austrian line on the River Gnila-Lipa. The Russians quickly break through and on 3 September capture the fortress of Lemberg. The entire Austrian position north of the Carpathian Mountains is now in danger.
Pacific
Start of the Australian invasion of Samoa, then a German colony (to 31 August). The attack is supported by a fleet that includes HMAS Australia and HMAS Melbourne.
