German VII Reserve Corps begins the bombardment of the forts around Mauberge.
German troops complete the encirlement of the Russian Second Army. General Alexander Samsonov, commander of the army, disappears in the confusion and is never seen again. His army collapes and by the time the battle ends on 31 August the Russians have lost 125,000 men.
War at Sea
Admiral von Spee leaves the Marshall Islands, heading for Fanning and Christmas Islands.
