Battle of Komarow

The Russian Fifth Army escapes from between the Austrian First and Fifth Armies, eluding a trap that the Russians had created for themselves. Although this battle was a minor Austrian success, defeats further east along the front line would soon force them to retreat back to the Carpathian Mountains.

Western Front

General Maunoury's Sixth Army moves into the area commanded by General Gallieni, commander of the Paris garrison. This takes it out of Joffre's command and could have caused a serious problem. This anomaly ends on 2 September.

War in the Air

Second (of two) RAF R.E.1 is destroyed when its Renault engine fails. The aircraft is serving with No.2 Squadron in France at the time.
