War at Sea
Three cross channel ferries (Empress, Riviera and Engadine) are taken over from the South East and Chatham Railway Company and converted to carry seaplanes for the RNAS.
Admiral von Spee's squadron arrives at Pagan Island in the Ladrones, his first war rendezvous. He stays until 13 August.
HMS Fox captures the Hansa liner Motkefels in the Indian Ocean.
