Third Battle of Antwerp

The Belgian army launched a counterattack designed to draw German troops away from their advance into France. The attack is launched from Antwerp towards Malines, and is stopped after three days

Battle of the Frontiers of France : Battle of the Ardennes

The French Third and Fourth armies are forced to pull back to the line of the Meuse after their attempt to advance into the Ardennes is repulsed.

Eastern Front

Battle of Krasnik

Second day of an encounter battle at the far west of the Austro-Russian section of the Eastern Front. On 24 August fighting between the Russian Fourth Army and the Austrian First Army spread along their entire front. The Russian right was forced to retreat.

Battle of Orlau-Frankenau

The Russian Second Army (Samsonov) runs into an entrenched German position. The outnumbered Germans are able to hold the Russians off all day and then withdraw back to Tanneberg.
