Battle of Mulhouse

German forces under General Josias von Heeringen launch a counterattack against the French who have just occupied Mulhouse. Within 24 gours of capturing the place General Bonneau orders his VII Corps to retreat. As a result he is removed from command of the corps.

War at Sea

British force is sent to investigate reports that the Germans were establishing U-boat bases on the Faeroes and Lofotens islands (9-10 August 1914). On reaching the area it soon became clear that the Norwegians were keeping a close guard against any such operation.

The cruiser HMS Birmingham rams and sinks U 15 while helping escort the BEF to France.
