Battle on the first day of the Russian invasion of East Prussia. The Russian First Army (Rennenkampf) runs into a single German corps (Hermann von Francois), and is badly mauled. The Russians briefly retreat to the border.

Belgian troops evacuate Brussels
The Canopus class battleship HMS Glory arrives at Halifax to become the flagship of Rear-Admiral R. S. Phipps Hornby, commander of North American Squadron. In October she escorts the first Canadian troop convoy part of the way across the Atlantic.
