First Battle of the Masurian Lakes

End of the First Battle of the Masurian Lakes. The Germans defeat the Russian First Army (Rennenkampft), but are unable to trap the Russians in the confused landscape of the lakes. The Russians escape and are even able to counterattack on 25 September.

War at Sea

Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, commander of the North American and West Indies Station, is told to prepare to fight the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and was promised the Defence, a powerful cruiser, as well as the Canopus, an older but still powerful battleship.

Admiral von Spee's squadron reaches Samoa but finds the New Zealand garrision too well dug in to risk an attack.

All crewmen captured by the German cruiser SMS Emden during her raid into the India Ocean are put onto the neutral steamer Kabinga and released.
