Hermuth von Moltke, the Chief of the German General Staff, issued orders to retreat to the line of the Aisne and to fortify the high ground north of the river

Battle of the Grande Couronne of Nancy

Serious German attacks towards Nancy end. By the end of September both of the armies involved (Castelnau for the French, Prince Rupprecht for the Germans) have been moved west to take part in the Race to the Sea.

Battles of Lemberg

Austrians intercept a Russian radio signal that gives away their position. This allows the Austrian Fourth Army to escape from a trap. The Austrian C-in-C, Marshal Conrad, attempts to order a continued offensive but his army commanders ignore him and later in the evening he orders a general retreat.

Battle of Rava Ruska

End of the battle of Rava Ruska. The Russian Fifth Army has advanced into a wide gap between the Austrian First and Fourth Army and attack them from the rear and flank. General Franz Conrad is forced to order a general retreat which only ends after they have pulled back over 100 miles.

Pacific

Australian expeditionary force reaches the German colony of Rabaul, supported by a fleet that includes HMAS Australia. By 15 September the colony has been conquered.
