Race to the Sea: Battle of Albert, 1914

Start of the Battle of Albert of 1914, part of the Race to the Sea. German troops from the German Sixth Army (Crown Prince Rupprecht) and the French Second Army (de Castelnau) clash around Albert. The Germans attempt to capture the town and turn the French left, the French resist every attack.

Western Front

Captain Harry Ranken, RAMC, suffered a serious leg injury while treating the wounded (19-20 September). He refuses to leave his post, and dies of his wounds on 25 September. He is awarded a posthumous VC for his actions.

First Battle of the Masurian Lakes

Russian First Army (Rennenkampf) counterattack, retaking most of the territory lost in the first battle of the Masurian Lakes (9-14 September). Despite this success the Russian threat to East Prussia has been lifted

War at Sea

Admiral von Spee arrives at the Marquesas Islands, remaining there until 1 October.

Africa

HMS Challenger crosses the barrier at the entrance to Duala, in the German colony of the Cameroons.
