End of the German counterattacks in Lorraine marks the end of the battle of Lorraine.
General Kluck, commander of the German First Army, realises that the French attack on his right attack is serious. He pulls back across the Marne and attacks the French. Reinforcements are rushed to the front, some of them in the famous Paris Taxis.
The fortress of Mauberge surrenders to the Germans after undergoing a week long bombardment and the loss of four of the fourteen forts on 5 September. This frees the German VII Reserve Corps to move to the Aisne, where it arrives just in time to plug a gap in the line.
