Second Austrian invasion of Serbia begins when their troops cross the River Drina. For the next ten days Serbian troops attempt to eliminate the Austrian bridgeheads but fail and are forced to retreat to a new defensive line.
Fourth day of the battle.
Von Kluck (German First Army) launches a counterattack west towards the French Sixth Army, briefly appearing to threaten Paris.
On the same day Moltke sends a staff officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Hentsch, to investigate the real state of affairs on the western flank of the German army. Hentsch believes that the First and Second Armies are in danger and suggests a retreat back behind the Marne.
9th Cruiser Squadron (Rear-Admiral de Robeck, including the cruiser Vindictive), captures the German coaler Slawentzitz, carrying 5,000 tons of Welsh coal.
