The German cruiser Emden, the most famous commerce raider of the war, carries out a short and daring bombardment of Madras. Two oil storage tanks are destroyed and the raid has a massive impact on the Indian economy until the Emden was finally sunk
French Second Army begins to move north-east from a point south of Amiens in the hope of getting around the German right flank. Instead the French run into elements of three German armies.
The three Cressy clash cruisers Hogue, Aboukir and Cressy are all sunk by U-9 in a single incidence in home waters. This demonstates just how dangerous the submarine could be. Other naval forces race to rescue the survivors, including the cruiser HMS Amethyst.
