Siege of Przemysl

The failure of the initial Austrian offensive on the eastern front forces them to retreat towards the Carpathians. The great fortress of Przemysl is left isolated, and on 24 September the Russians begin a siege of the 150,000 strong garrison.

Race to the Sea: First Battle of Picardy

A full scale battle develops between the French Second Army and Sixth Army on the from Albert down to Noyon on the Oise. The Germans attack the French right flank at Roye but fail to break a gap in the French line.
