First battle of Ypres: Battle of Nonne Booschen

Twelve and a half divisions from two army groups make the last German attempt to break through the British lines around Ypres. The Germans capture part of the British front line but are unable to push on any further and the real danger of a German breakthrough ends.

Brigadier General Charles FitzClarence, VC, commander of the 1st (Guards) Brigade, is shot and killed by a German sniper during the battle.

Battle of Lodz

German Ninth Army under General Mackensen attack between the Russian First and Second armies. The First Army is crushed by the Second Army is rescued by the time the battle ends on 25 November.
