Middle East

War at Sea

News that the German raider Emden is attacking the Cocos Islands reaches the naval forces escorting the ANZAC troop convoy on its way to Britain. The captain of HMAS Melbourne, then in charge of the convoy, detaches the Sydney to catch her. She arrives at 9am forcing the Emden to make to sea with part of her crew still on the island. By 11.20am the Emden is so badly damaged that her captain decides to run her aground on North Keeling Island. Sydney had total command of the battle, suffering 4 dead and 12 wounded compared to 115 dead and 56 wounded on the Emden.
