Battle of the Somme: Battle of Pozieres Ridge

Start of the battle of Pozieres Ridge, the official name for the fighting between the River Ancre and the village of Bazentin le Petiti. This was near the highest ground ont he Somme battlefield and progress was very slow during the nearly six weeks of fighting.

Most of the village of Pozieres is captured by the 1st Australian Division on the first day of the battle.

War at Sea

British naval force under Commodore Tyrwhitt (flying his flag on the cruiser HMS Carysfort), takes part in a mission to protect the Dutch trade. The force clashes with three German destroyers, but fails to sink any of them (22-23 July)
