1 July 1916
First day of the Battle of the Somme, the most costly single day in British military history. A seven day bombardment fails to destroy the German lines and along most of the line the British make no progress. On the right of the British line XIII corps is more succesful, taking the German front line. The British suffer 57,000 casualties during the day, which comes to dominate the public image of the Battle of the Somme.
