Battle of the Somme: Battle of Fromelles

Minor British offensive launched in an attempt to prevent the Germans from moving reinforcements from this quiet sector down to the Somme, where a breakthrough was believed to be imminent. The British attack is badly planned and achieves nothing.

Earlier in July General Max von Gallwitz is moved from Verdun to take command of the Second Army on the Somme. On 19 July he is give command of Army Group Gallwitz, with the First and Second Armies.

Fritz von Below is moved from command of the Second Army to the re-formed First Army (the original First Army was disbanded in September 1915).
