Battle of Cambrai

Mk IV Tank 'Hyacinth' Ditched at Cambrai, 20 November 1917
Mk IV Tank 'Hyacinth'
Ditched at Cambrai,
20 November 1917

After a brief artillery bombardment the British launch the first large-scale tank attack in history. 300 tanks attack on a 10,000yard front and overrun most of the German front line. In some places the British advance four miles into the German lines, but they are less succesful in the centre of the line and fail to take advantage of this stunning success. On 30 November the Germans counter-attack and retake most of the lost ground and by the end of the battle the lines are roughly back where they started.
