Third naval attempt to force the Dardannelles. Three waves of Allied battleships are involved. The first wave contains HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Agamemnon, HMS Lord Nelson and HMS Inflexible. The second wave was provided by the French and consisted of the Gaulois, Charlemagne, Bouvet and Suffren. The third wave was British, and contained HMS Vengeance, HMS Irresistable, HMS Albion and HMS Ocean. HMS Prince George and HMS Triumph attack on the flanks.
The attack begins well but the third wave runs into a minefield and the Allied battleships Bouvet, Irresistible and Ocean are all sunk. The naval attack is called off and plans for a land campaign begin.
Amongst the supporting fleet is the Duncan class battleship HMS Cornwallis, which protects the mine sweepers and HMS Canopus, a battleship famous for her part in the battle of the Falklands.
