Meuse-Argonne Offensive

Start of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the southern part of the great triple offensive that broke the German lines on the Western Front. It was also the largest American battle of the war.

The attacl was carried out by the American First Army (Pershing) and the French Fourth Army (Henri Gourand). The Americans were to attack in the east, the French in the west.

The attack begins on 26 September. The Americans face the harder task, attacking strong twelve-mile deep German defences. Even so they advance two miles in the Argonne forest and five miles on the Meus in five days. In the same period the more experienced French advance nine miles.
