Battle of Piave

The last Austrian offensive of the First World War. Having been handed a major victory by the Germans the Austrians were left to cope by themselves. They wasted their chance by deciding to carry out two attacks at the same time. Franz von Conrad's attack, on the Trentino front, failed quickly. Baron Svetozan Borojevic von Bojna's attack on the Piave was more successful, but the Italians were able to move reinforcements from the Trentino and by the time the battle ended on 23 June the Austrians were back where they started.
