War at Sea.
U-86 sinks the transport ship Covington (ID # 1409), previously the SS Cincinnati of the Hamburg-American Line. The destroyers USS Conner (DD-72) and USS Smith (DD-17) help rescue some of the 770 survivors. USS Reid (DD-21) attempts to attack the U-boat, but without success.
The Wickes class destroyer USS Dyer (DD-84) is commissioned. She operated from Gibraltar late in the First World War and then served as flagship of the US naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean in 1919
