Ludendorff Offensive: Noyon-Montdidier Offensive

Start of the fourth of Ludendorff's offensives of 1918. This time the aim is much smaller scale - the Germans hope to link the salients they had created on the Somme and the Marne. 9 June sees the start of the Sommer attack, with the German Eighteenth Army attacking the French Third Army from the north. This attack makes some progress.

War at Sea

The Wickes class destroyer USS Ludlow (DD-112) is launched at the Union Iron Works, San Francisco. She served with the Atlantic Fleet in 1919-20 and the Pacific Fleet in 1921-29, after being converted into a light mine layer in 1920.

The standard history of the development of American destroyers, from the earliest torpedo boat destroyers to the post-war fleet, and covering the massive classes of destroyers built for both World Wars. Gives the reader a good understanding of the debates that surrounded each class of destroyer and led to their individual features.
