War at Sea

The Wickes class destroyer USS Sigourney (DD-81) is commissioned. She operated from Brest during the First World War, and served with the Royal Norwegian Navy and Royal Navy as HMS Newport during the Second World War.

The Wickes class destroyer USS Ward (DD-139) is laid down at Mare Island. She was launched only fifteen days later (a record), and commissioned on 24 July 1918, but then remained on the US West Coast for the rest of the First World War.
