Western Front

General Hubert Gough is replaced by Sir Henry Rawlinson as commander of the Fifth Army after suffering a serious defeat at the start of Ludendorff's first great offensive of 1918, the Second Battle of the Somme.

War at Sea

The Wickes class destroyers USS Robinson (DD-88) and USS Schley (DD-103) are launched at the Union Iron Works, San Francisco. The Robinson served in the Royal Navy as HMS Newmarket during the Second World War. The Schley entered service in the last weeks of the First World War, but saw most service as a fast transport during the Second World War, earning 11 battle stars in the Pacific

The Coln class light cruiser SMS Dresden becomes the second and last of the ten ships in her class to be commissioned.
