As a result of the German successes on the Somme a high level conference takes place at Doullens. The French send the President, Prime Minister Clemenceau, the Minister of Munitions, Foch and Petain. The British send Lord Milner (War Minister), General Wilson (Chief of the Imperial General Staff) and General Haig. As a result Foch is give overall command of the Allied armies on the Western Front.
The Wickes class destroyer USS Barney (DD-149) is laid down at Cramps. She wasn't completed in time for the First World War, but served on convoy escort duties in the Caribbean, as well as escorting two trans-Atlantic convoys during the Second World War.
