Ludendoff Offensives: Second Battle of the Somme

General Ivor Maxse orders his 18th Corps to disengage from the Germans and immediately pull back to the Somme, creating a gap in the British line that forces a more general retreat. He defends his actions, but in April 1918 was promoted away from the front to become inspector-general of training in France
