The battle of Broodseinde was the third of three succesful 'bite and hold' battles launched by General Plumer in the middle phase of the third battle of Ypres. The British captured their objectives for the attack and defeated the inevitable German counterattack. These three successes helped convince Haig that there was a chance of a breakthrough, but the weather intervened. Heavy rain turned the battlefield to mud and the next British attacks (at Poelcapelle and Passchendaele) were costly disasters.
