French counterattack begins. Fort Douaumont is retaken on the first day of the attack after sufferin heavy damage during the artillery bombardment. During the day the French also retake the strongpoint of Thiaumont, Thiaumont Farm, Douaumont village. For once every one of the day's objectives was taken.
