Start of preliminary operations for a planned assault on both sides of the River Ancre, designed to eliminate a German salient.
The preliminary assault, led by the Canadian Corps, is designed to capture the Regina Trench, part of the German front line. The Canadians make little or no progress against their main target, which is eventually captured in a new attack on 21 October.
Start of the last officially acknowledged battle on the Fourth Army Front during the battle of the Somme. The attack is intended to straighten the lines in preparation for a more general offensive aimed towards La Transloy.
