Start of the Second Battle of Artois. French troops make impressive progress on the first day, with Petain's XXXIII corps advancing two and a half miles in the first hour and a half of the battle and the 77th and Moroccan Divisions reaching the top of Vimy Ridge.
The German reserves are better placed than the French reserves, and by the end of the day counterattacks have pushed the French off the ridge. The rest of the battle becomes a costly attritional struggle, with little gained.
The battle of Aubers Ridge was to be the British contribution to the Allied Spring offensive of 1915, alongside the French battle of Artois. The aim was to capture Neuve Chapelle and the Aubers Ridge, but the attack was a total failure, and was cancelled early on 10 May by Sir Douglas Haig, then commander of the First Army. The BEF lost 11,000 men in a single day.
