After suggesting this his men needed to retreat nearer to Ypres Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien was ordered to hand command of his troops to General Plumer (27 April). On 6 May Smith-Dorrien asked to be relieved of his command, and soon afterwards returned to Britain.
