Battle of the Selle

All three British armies involved in the battle (First, Second and Fourth) launch a night attack early on 23 October. In two days they advance 20 miles and are now twenty miles behind the Hindenburg Line. The Germans retreat to a new line between Valenciennes and the Sambre, but that falls to a British attack that begins on 4 November.

War at Sea

The Wickes class destroyer USS Breese (DD-112) is commissioned. She reaches the Cruiser Force of the Atlantic Fleet just in time to serve as a convoy escort during the last week of the First World War.
