Start of the Brusilov Offensive, one of the most succesful Russian attacks of the First World War. General Brusilov attacked along a 200 mile front using 200,000 men and achieved remarkable successes agains the Austrians, forcing the Germans to move reinforcements to the Austrian front. By the time the offensive ended in September the Russians had advanced 200 miles at the southern end of the front, but the battle helped exhaust their armies and may have played a part in the outbreak of revolution.
HMS Queen Elizabeth leaves dock after having two 6in guns replaced with 3in anti-aircraft guns. As a result she missed the battle of Jutland.
The Germans use four large flame throwers on the roof to support the fighting within Fort Vaux. Late in the day Commandant Raynal discovers that the water cistern is almost empty, and the defenders will thus have to surrender if not rescued. He manages to get this message to the French high command, and is informed that a counterattack is due on 6 June.
