Second day of the battle of Jutland sees the Germans evade British attempts to intercept them on their way home and reach port safely.
The badly damaged battleship HMS Marlborough begins the dangerous journey home, escorted by the scout crusier HMS Fearless.
HMS Warspite, badly damaged on 31 May, reaches safety at Rosyth. The Germans claim to have sunk her in their first statement on the battle.
Just after midnight HMS Black Prince runs into the middle of the German fleet and after two minutes is on fire from end to end. She explodes at 12.10am with no survivors.
Start of a new German offensive at Verdun, this time with the intention of capturing the city (Operation 'May Cup'). Five divisions are involved in the attack, which achieves its early objectives quite quickly.
